St Luke’s Episcopal Church Back to School Backpack Event 2019 marks the fifteenth year of the “Back to School Event” which began in 2005 with the distribution of 10 backpacks to neighborhood children who were without school supplies for the school year. As of last year, 2018, we are proud to announce we have given away 5,662 filled backpacks to children in our community. We do not have any stipulations as to who may obtain a backpack other than they must be present to receive their gifts and be in grades K-8. This year our annual event will be held on August 3, 2019. We hope to give away 650 filled backpacks plus 50 pre-school packs, dental supplies, free haircuts, a book to read and some snacks. Also present that day: Volunteers from the Martin County Library system to assist those wanting to sign up for a library card; the Martin County Sheriff’s Community Outreach Unit; the Martin County Fire Rescue Department who delight children with a seat in the fire truck and information on fire safety; a face painting artist; and, therapy dogs to delight. Each year, on the first Saturday of August, the lines begin forming before the volunteers arrive. In 2018 more than 700 students and their family members attended the event. Before the doors opened at 8 am, the parking lot was filled with anxious children who awaited their surprises. Refreshments were available and the crowd was directed to our Church building for a seat, some shade, live music, information on the day’s events, a slide show and puzzles and games to keep them busy until it is their turn to pick out their very own backpack. In the past, we have had to turn children away to the heartbreak of the volunteers as our supply of backpacks was depleted. There are several elementary and middle schools within a 2.5 mile radius. Some rank among the top 10 in the county for the highest rates of free and reduced price lunches. These are the children we hope to reach. Contents of the backpacks are determined from a list of needed supplies that the school sends out for each grade. The majority of children from low income families in this area will not be going to school with these items. It is our hope that we can at least send some of them ready and prepared to enter their classroom. Each backpack has a value of about $25. Our “Sponsor a Child” program collects donations of $20 from January to July from anyone willing to give. The sponsors of this program include: St Luke’s parishioners, outside donors and Episcopal Charities of Southeast Florida through their grant program. Without our donors this program would not be possible. If you wish to make a donation, make checks payable to: “St. Luke’s Episcopal Church Backpack Program” and note in the memo area: “Back to School Event”. Also provided in addition to the backpacks: free haircuts by 4 licensed haircutters, information on safety from the police and fire departments, dental supplies, an age appropriate book to read, snacks and a face painting artist. Our thrift store also participates with a major sale event. For more information on the “Back to School Event”, donations or volunteering you may call St. Luke’s at 772-286-5455 or Vicki Zambardino 772-221-8345.
